Are you a thought leader? Well, show me!

"Are you a thought leader?" is a question I often ask leaders that I advise or coach from a personal sales & marketing perspective. Most tell me that they consider themselves thought leaders & they tell me why. I then ask them "Well, then show me" and 95% of people struggle to provide evidence. Some have presented at large events, some have written books, others have contributed to podcasts - but most struggle to produce evidence.

When someone hears your name in relation to a new job or new business opportunity, the first thing they do is their research. Google and LinkedIn search. It's your opportunity to impress their socks off. However, if there's nothing to see, you can't impress. As they say, 'You can't sell a secret'. Are you showing your Thought Leadership?

What Is A Thought Leader, By Definition?

Let’s start with the basic definition of a thought leader. This is a person who is specialised in a given area and whom others in that industry turn to for guidance. As the term implies, a thought leader leads others in the thinking around a given topic. It’s about being authentic and empowering. It’s about influence—getting other people to think differently about something specific.

Thought leaders bring alternate views and insightful points to the table. Your audience, and business success, will follow.

As a leader, why is it important to become a Thought Leader?

As a leader, it is crucial to strive towards becoming a thought leader within your industry. Thought leadership goes beyond simply occupying a position of authority; it involves actively shaping and influencing the discourse surrounding your field of expertise. By establishing yourself as a thought leader, you not only demonstrate your deep understanding and mastery of your industry but also showcase your innovative thinking and forward-looking approach.

Thought leadership enables you to inspire and guide others, driving positive change and fostering growth within your organisation and beyond. It enhances your credibility and visibility, opening doors to new opportunities for collaboration, networking, and professional advancement.

Moreover, by sharing your insights and expertise with others, you contribute to the collective knowledge and progress of your industry, leaving a lasting impact on your peers, followers, and the broader community.

Ultimately, embracing thought leadership allows you to position yourself as a trusted authority, empowering you to lead with vision, purpose, and influence.

Why is thought leadership important to my personal brand and professional aspirations?

Thought leadership is instrumental in bolstering your personal brand and advancing your professional aspirations in several key ways.

Firstly, it elevates your visibility and credibility within your industry, positioning you as a go-to resource for expertise and insights. As your thought leadership activities garner attention and recognition, they contribute to building a strong and reputable personal brand, distinguishing you from your peers and competitors. This, in turn, enhances your professional reputation and opens doors to new opportunities, whether it's securing speaking engagements, attracting clients or job offers, or forging strategic partnerships.

Thought leadership also provides a platform for showcasing your unique perspectives, innovative ideas, and problem-solving abilities, reinforcing your value proposition and setting you apart as a thought leader. By consistently sharing valuable content and engaging with your audience, you can cultivate a loyal following and network of supporters who trust and respect your expertise.

Ultimately, thought leadership serves as a powerful catalyst for achieving your professional goals and aspirations, propelling you towards greater success and influence in your career journey.
