How secure is your job security? Should we shift our attention to 'career security' instead?
Based on what we have been experiencing, the answer is not very secure.
Gone are the days when you had a job for life. The next generation will be lucky to experience Long Service Leave!
Over the past few years, many people have suffered a sudden job loss through redundancy, contract expiry or early contract termination. Many people didn't see it coming.
Whilst employers & organisations tell you that they're loyal to you, things change quickly in the face of adversity. Let's face it, company profits, shareholder returns & senior executive bonuses are more important.
I think it's safe to say that we can't really control job security...but what about career security - sustainable employment?
Here are my tips:
1️⃣ Be Loyal to Yourself - don't live in the fools paradise that your employer is loyal to you. Put yourself first. Remember, it's only a job
2️⃣ Be Alert - look out for the tell-tale signs that your current employer or client is going to change direction or cut costs
3️⃣ Nurture your Network - continue to grow your professional network & stay in constant contact. Your network is your superpower & a great source of new opportunities
4️⃣ Learn to Hustle - it's not what you think. Don't listen to your inner voice. Don't fear asking people for help or to chase them up. If a friend ask you for help, would you refuse?
5️⃣ Don't Rest on Your Laurels - when you get your next gig, don't take a huge sigh of relief & stop your networking & hustle. It's like muscle memory - hard to build, easy to lose & forget. Always stay in shape
6️⃣ Always Be Ready for Action - constantly keep your LinkedIn profile & resume up to date - you never know who's looking.
7️⃣ Never Stop Looking - if you stop looking, your dream job may pass you by. Don't feel guilty about having that coffee chat with an old boss, having that interview - you never know where things could lead
Swapping Job Security for Career Security is a positive step towards supporting TeamYou!
