Is LinkedIn Death Scrolling Killing Your Job Search Productivity?

Ever opened LinkedIn for “just 5 minutes”...and suddenly it’s 47 minutes later and you’ve achieved absolutely nothing? Welcome to the LinkedIn deathscroll!
You start with good intentions:
“I’ll check a few updates…”
Next thing you know:
– You’ve read 12 “I’m humbled to announce…” posts
– Compared yourself to 7 people who just landed roles
– Questioned your entire career
– And somehow feel both busy… and unproductive
Here’s the kicker.
It feels like job searching.
But it’s not.
It’s consumption.
And while you’re scrolling:
Someone else is commenting
Someone else is posting
Someone else is getting noticed
That’s where the opportunities are hiding.
Not in the feed…
In the conversations.
I’ve seen it too many times.
Talented people stuck in a loop:
Scroll → Compare → Doubt → Repeat
No outreach.
No visibility.
No momentum.
Just quiet frustration.
So here’s a simple rule:
Give yourself 15 minutes to scroll.
Then get off the bench and into the game:
– Comment on 5 posts
– Message 3 people
– Share one thought
Because LinkedIn doesn’t reward spectators.
It rewards participation.
Curious…
How much time do you think you’ve lost to the deathscroll this week?
