"...but the job market slows down from the start of December until February. Is this really true?

job searching during the holidays

I have some thoughts...

Christmas is just around the corner, and for many job seekers, it can bring added anxiety.

The belief that “everything slows down before Christmas” might make you feel like pressing, stressful pause.

But after years in IT recruitment and professional services, I’m here to tell you - this couldn’t be further from the truth.

In fact, the lead-up to Christmas is often busier than expected. And January? Sure, some people take holidays, but it’s far from a downtime. Hiring happens year-round—it just requires good strategy and persistence.

2024 might not have been the easiest year for the IT job market, but here’s my advice: don’t give up. Use this season to ramp up your efforts and position yourself for success in 2025.

Here’s how:

Network, Network, Network!

Reach out to your connections and let them know you’re looking. Staying top-of-mind means you’ll be the first person they think of when an opportunity arises.

Stay Connected with Recruiters

Focus on the ones who actually respond (not the ghosts 👻). Keep the conversation alive and make sure they know you’re ready for your next role.

Be Visible on LinkedIn

Post updates, engage with others, and stay active. Your presence ensures people remember you when it matters most.

Get Out There & Party!

Yes, even Christmas parties can be networking gold. Many recruitment agencies host holiday events—reach out to your favourite recruiter and see if you can join the festivities. These gatherings are perfect for expanding your connections.

Keep the Job Search Momentum

Don’t assume no one’s hiring over the holidays. While others slow down, you can stand out by keeping your search active.

Being in the right place at the right time isn’t luck—it’s strategy and execution.

Stay consistent, stay positive, and keep showing up.

You’ve got this. 💪

Let’s finish 2024 strong and set ourselves up for a successful 2025! 👏

Which of these tips will you try first?

P.S. Don’t forget to share this with someone who needs encouragement this season. ♻️
