Who do you need to check in with?

An old friend of mine went quiet on me about four months ago. Turned out he'd lost his contract and didn't want to say anything. Today I'm thinking about him.

That's the bit people don't talk about enough. Job seeking is one of the loneliest things you can do, and it's usually done alone, at home, refreshing job boards nobody's really looking at.

I've watched plenty of genuinely capable people go from confident and busy to second guessing every LinkedIn message they send. Not because they got worse at their job. Because nobody told them the market had changed the rules on them.

Today's R U OK Day. I'm not going to pretend one message fixes any of that. But if there's someone in your network who's gone a bit quiet lately, an old colleague, a mate, someone you haven't seen post in a while, it's probably worth checking in properly. Not "how's the job hunt going", just how they actually are.

And if you know someone who's hiring and they'd genuinely be a fit, say something. It costs you nothing and it might matter more than you think.

I keep thinking about how many people we lose touch with simply because they stopped showing up once they were out of work. Makes me wonder how many of them are just waiting for someone to ask first.
