What's your job seeking theme song?

Halfway through a coaching session with Donna Chang this afternoon, we drifted off topic and started talking about job seeking theme songs. It's been stuck in my head ever since.

A lot of job searching is done by yourself, in silence. Rewriting your headline for the fourth time, sending applications from the kitchen table, checking your phone more than you'd like to admit. Music doesn't fix any of that, but it does change how the afternoon feels.

My vote goes to Don't You Forget About Me by Simple Minds. It's one of my all-time favourite songs, and not just because I'm a job seeking and career coach. Although the title is pretty much the job.

Nearly every experienced person I coach is perfectly capable of doing the role. What's usually gone wrong is that the people who could hire them haven't heard from them in years.

A few other contenders that came up:

I'm Still Standing by Elton John, for anyone a couple of months past a redundancy.

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For by U2, for week eight of applications.

Call Me by Blondie, for the recruiter who said they'd get back to you Tuesday.

Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie, for the night before the second interview.

Should I Stay or Should I Go by The Clash, for anyone sitting on a counteroffer.

It's a Long Way to the Top by AC/DC, which feels about right most weeks.

You're the Voice by John Farnham, for finally posting on LinkedIn after years of lurking.

Eye of the Tiger by Survivor. Someone was always going to say it.

I'd love to know what's actually playing while you work through your applications. Extra credit if it's one you'd be slightly embarrassed to admit to.
