The Golden Moment: When the Recruiter Calls You First

Trevor Churchley ·

A delighted job seeker on the phone at his desk, with the words: The Golden Moment. The recruiter called you first with a new vacancy

Jodie rang Travis on a Wednesday afternoon and said the vacancy had his name all over it. He was her only call. Eighteen months earlier he couldn't get anyone to call him back.

Eighteen months is a long stretch to keep believing a recruiter will eventually ring, especially when most of that time Travis was applying as a broad generalist tech leader, the kind of title that reads fine on a resume and gets forgotten by lunchtime.

We rebuilt his brand around GRC Leader and Consultant instead. Specific enough that a recruiter scanning it for seven seconds knew exactly which drawer to file him in.

Jodie came through Laura, an agency owner Travis met at one of our events. From there he just kept showing up, once a week sometimes less, commenting on Jodie's posts instead of the usual thumbs up and vanish, and sending her the odd candidate when he saw a fit for her vacancies.

They also bantered about her football team most weeks, having a shocker of a season. Never found out if that helped his case.

None of it was calculated like a strategy document would suggest, just simpler than that. Jodie got to know Travis as reliable and easy to deal with, good at the work he talked about. She trusted he was placeable well before she had anything to place him into.

Then the call came. "Travis, I've just received a new vacancy and it has your name all over it." There wasn't a shortlist. He was already the only name on the page.

This is exactly what Bootcamp Six of The Hustle Game was built around. How to become an easy to place job seeker, and what we call the Golden Moment, the point where a recruiter or hiring manager thinks of you before they think of anyone else. Put simply, an easy to place job seeker is someone a recruiter can represent without hesitation, clear about what they do and backed by enough evidence that trust isn't a risk. The room stayed properly locked in for that one.

A few client interviews later Travis accepted the offer and ended an eighteen month hiatus. From where anyone else was standing it probably looked like luck.

Travis isn't a one off either. Plenty of Talentology clients get their own Golden Moment, and for me it's the tell-tale sign their hustle is genuinely working, that they're finally close to losing the green ring.

I loved delivering that session. I loved being part of Travis's Golden Moment even more. This is the stuff that actually fills my cup.

I'd love to know how many people reading this have a recruiter right now who'd make that exact call for them tomorrow. My honest guess is fewer than most of us would like to admit.
