Say no to (your) unemployment

Trevor Churchley ·

Trevor Churchley leads a march of smiling job seekers in Talentology, CareerAGILITY, The Hustle Game and Fractional+45 t-shirts down a city street, carrying a banner with the words: Say no to (your) unemployment

Last week the Reserve Bank governor said unemployment needs to edge higher to bring inflation down. Tell that to someone who has been applying for months and hearing nothing back.

This isn't a political post. The Reserve Bank has a job to do, and it lifted the cash rate again on Tuesday. I get it.

But I'm thinking about the people behind the unemployment figure, which reached 4.6% in August, the highest since the pandemic.

A lot of them lost their jobs through no fault of their own. Restructures, work moving offshore, companies cutting roles to fund their AI plans. Atlassian and WiseTech Global made the headlines this year, and there is a long list of other employers doing the same. Many more people will be in that position over the next 6 to 12 months because of things they have no control over.

On top of that, they're trying to get through a recruitment process nobody ever explained to them which is negatively influenced by AI. They apply, they get ignored or ghosted, and then they get another round of advice they're too tired to take in.

So my message to anyone who is unemployed, or about to be, is to say no to your unemployment. Waiting for someone to respond to your application isn't a strategy. It's time to take control and do everything you possibly can to be successful at job searching.

People are getting jobs right now. I lead a community of them, and the ones getting results are the ones who learnt to hustle their way there. Rather than sitting back and being defined by unemployment, stand up and define it.

So here's my call out to you. Join the cause. SAY NO TO (YOUR) UNEMPLOYMENT!
