Job seeking
Is job seeker advice fatigue grinding you down?
Trevor Churchley ·
I met a senior IT leader recently who looked defeated, and it wasn't only the market. Friends, ex-colleagues, family, recruiters had all given her conflicting advice. Who to believe???
I call it job seeker advice fatigue, and if you've been job hunting you probably know this feeling. Monday, an ex-colleague tells you to stop applying online and start ringing people. Tuesday, a recruiter says your CV is too long. Wednesday, someone on LinkedIn says nobody reads CVs and you should be posting every day. Your brother-in-law asks if you've thought about contracting. Your partner asks, gently, if you've considered a different industry.
Every one of them is kind and every one of them is confident. That's what makes it hard to push back on. Most of them are right about their own experience too. It just isn't your search.
So you try all of it. You rewrite the CV on Sunday night. You send a few messages that feel awkward. You apply for a pile of roles on Thursday, then someone tells you that's the worst use of your time and you feel a bit silly. Next week you change the approach again.
After a few weeks something shifts. You stop being sure of anything. You've run teams and signed off budgets, and now a two line message from a friend has you wondering for an hour whether they think you're doing it wrong.
Then you start avoiding people. Not because you don't care about them, but because every catch-up comes with another instruction and you've run out of ways to nod politely.
That's what I saw in this woman. She hadn't stopped trying. She told me she couldn't work out what was fact and what was fiction anymore. All she wanted was a no-drama path to a job, and what she'd got instead was job seeker advice fatigue.
I don't want to blow my own trumpet here too much. I'm privileged to say that I've helped hundreds of people achieve job seeking success through my advice and as they say success speaks for itself. If you need advice from an expert, we're here to help and not confuse.
I'd love to know what the most confusing piece of advice you were given during a job search was. I suspect most people have one that flatly cancelled out another.
