“Would You Do That to Your Mum or Dad?” – Calling Out Ageism in Hiring

Ageism in hiring isn’t about ability - it’s about perception. At 65, Australians aren’t “past it,” they’re being pushed out of it. It’s time to treat experience as value, not expiry.

Here’s a question for the hiring managers and recruiters aged 30 to 40 - if you saw your parents being treated unfairly because of their age, would you stay quiet?

Because that’s what ageism really is - turning away from people right when they need the system they helped build; a quiet betrayal of the very generation who taught us how to work, lead, and show up.

This was an interesting article from the The Sydney Morning Herald. At 65, Australians aren’t “past it”, they’re being pushed out of it.

Ageism in hiring isn’t just discrimination, it’s a quiet cultural betrayal.

We see it every day at Talentology AU. Decades of skill, leadership and loyalty discarded because someone “won’t fit the culture” or “might not keep up” and all the other ridiculous ageism stigmas.

Let’s be honest. These are the same people who built that culture, who taught us how to keep up in the first place.

The problem isn’t ability. It’s perception. The courage to look past a number and see value, not expiry.

So before you scroll past the next over-50 resume, ask yourself:

Would you do that to your mum or dad?
