Being Unemployed Over Christmas Is Stressful

Being unemployed over Christmas is stressful. Let's help our industry colleagues find a new job before the break. Are you with me? Here are some ways we can help.....

As Christmas approaches, many of us are counting down the days until a well-earned break and time off with friends and family.

But for some, the approach to Christmas is going to be stressful—especially for those in the tech industry navigating unemployment after a very challenging year.

2024 has been tough. Economic downturns, corporate restructuring and a brutal job market have left many talented professionals without jobs—not due to their shortcomings, but because of circumstances beyond their control.

For them, the holidays can amplify feelings of stress, frustration and anxiety.

This is where we can make a difference. Here’s how:

✅ Spot and Share Vacancies

See a vacancy on LinkedIn that might suit someone in need? Tag them. A single connection could open doors they thought were closed.

Is your company hiring? Refer a friend. Your referral could make all the difference?

✅ Extend an Invite to a Celebration

Whether it’s a Christmas party or casual celebratory drinks, including someone can ease their sense of isolation and bring a little joy. They could even do some networking!

✅ Prioritise Unemployed Candidates

If you’re hiring, consider giving someone out of work a chance. You might just change their trajectory.

✅ Pick Up the Phone and Say Hi!

A simple call can go a long way. Let someone know they’re not alone—it matters more than you think.

✅ Refer Them to a Trusted Recruiter

A referral could be the key to new opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise find.

This Christmas, let’s embrace the season’s true spirit: lifting others up. Even the smallest act of kindness can make a world of difference.

Over to you:

What can you do to support a colleague this Christmas?

Share your thoughts, tag someone, or comment below. Together, we can turn this season into a brighter one for those who need it most.

Repost to inspire kindness in your network. ♻️
