I get this question all the time from our talent community.
After 27 years in IT recruitment and professional services, I get it. Job seeking can feel like being blindfolded in a maze.
But if you understand the dynamics and play it smart, you can turn frustration into opportunity.
Here’s how:
• Understand the Recruiter’s Role
Recruiters are gatekeepers who work for their paying clients - employers. They're not tech experts; they’re focused on sales & marketing, matching job descriptions to resumes. They are very busy people with lots going on & lots of people to keep updated. Knowing this helps you better position yourself.
• Be Honest About Your Suitability
Recruiters don’t recruit on potential; they recruit on current skills. If you’re not a clear match, chances are you won’t hear back.
PRO TIP: Save time by doing a GenAI Match/Gap Analysis between your resume & the job spec. If it’s a fit, optimise your resume with the right keywords, then apply with confidence. Not a clear fit, move onto the next vacancy.
• Don’t Fall for AI Snake Oil
OMG! Some AI apps claim you can apply for 1,000+ jobs in 30 seconds. Sound too good to be true? That’s because it is. Using these tools recklessly can hurt your reputation as a job seeker.
• Accept the Good & Bad
Like any industry, recruitment has its share of both stellar & subpar recruiters. Remember: many recruiters are amazing, genuinely skilled and eager to help. Avoid the bad & work with the good.
• Ghosting Is Real
Yes, ghosting is at epidemic levels. Often, recruiters themselves get ghosted by clients with no feedback to pass on. IT'S FRUSTRATING!!! Try this - instead of complaining, take control - stay consistent & proactive in seeking feedback from your recruiter.
• Stay Visible
Good recruiters are busy, with names, resumes & vacancies flying around. Keep in touch to stay on their radar. Recruitment is all about being in the right place at the right time.
• Engage on LinkedIn
Recruiters frequently post jobs and advice here. Like, comment & share their posts. Tag yourself if you’re interested, or refer a colleague. This keeps you visible & builds goodwill.
• Secure Your Spot in the Shortlist
If a recruiter asks for Authority to Represent, get confirmation you’ll be submitted to the client. Some recruiters may not send every candidate they agree to represent, so be sure to ask for their assurance in writing.
• Stay Calm & Professional
Recruiters face flak daily. Staying calm and professional can set you apart—and get you further.
